Sisters establish pig rearing for food and income generating projects.

Sisters give a sow and a boar to peasant farmers to start their own projects.

In June 2018, ASEC U.S. staff visited Uganda and interviewed 29 participants, alumnae and stakeholders. They also conducted site visits in seven locations including farms, hospitals, schools, a water production plant and more. Staff met three SLDI alumnae from the Good Samaritan Sisters; Mother John Mushiga, Sr. Juliet Sanyu and Sr. Peter Namasinga. The sisters operate Kyasira Home of Hope, an orphanage/boarding school. They also maintain a farm where they teach students and the community how to grow food. They also raise pigs, chickens, goats and ducks!

Sisters have established pig rearing not only for food, but also as income generating projects. Encouraging local people to engage in agricultural activities is the norm; sisters give a sow and a boar to peasant farmers to start their own projects. Pigs are reared for meat production because they produce more quickly than other livestock.

This project is directly addressing UN Sustainable Development Goal(s):
