Across Africa, Catholic sisters are gathering for something more than a workshop. They are coming together to learn and, beyond that, to reflect, reconnect, and renew their sense of purpose within their academic journeys. Higher Education for Sisters in Africa (HESA) Reflective Learning Workshops are creating space for something deeper, a chance for sisters to recognize how far they’ve come and prepare for what lies ahead.
Reflective Learning Workshops are a core part of the HESA program. Each year, participants enroll in partner institutions as part of cohorts, forming strong support networks with other women religious. These cohorts come together at the start of the program for orientation and again during annual Reflective Learning Workshops. Typically held over two days in each country, the workshops bring together all cohorts studying at partner institutions, creating space for shared experience and continued support. Topics are shaped by the needs sisters identify in program evaluations, along with input from faculty and administrators. This ensures each workshop responds to real challenges and priorities as they emerge throughout the year.

The gatherings are also a time to rejoice. Workshop participants come together to recognize their academic progress and share milestones that might otherwise go unnoticed. In March, workshops were held in Nigeria, Uganda, and Tanzania, followed by workshops in Cameroon, Kenya, and a second workshop in Tanzania in April, marking important moments of growth across cohorts.
As the workshops progress, they also represent rebirth. Participants gain renewed confidence as they engage in learning that reflects their current, real-life experiences. The adaptive structure of Reflective Learning Workshops allows them to refocus, strengthen their approach to their studies, and carry on work and service with clarity.
Renewal is at the heart of each gathering. By gathering cohorts within each country, the workshops reinforce the relationships that sustain participants throughout their education. Participants complete their workshops with renewed motivation for both their studies and ministries, supported by a network that continues beyond the workshop itself.

The impact continues to grow as more workshops are scheduled for May in South Sudan, Malawi, Lesotho, Zambia, Ghana, and a second workshop in Kenya. Each workshop builds on the last, contributing to a broader movement of connection, learning, and shared purpose across countries.
Through HESA Reflective Learning Workshops, participants continue to create impact. They rejoice in their progress, experience rebirth through responsive learning, and return to their communities renewed in purpose, strengthening their ability to serve those in need.
