African Sisters Education Collaborative
(July-August 2013) While Catholic sisters are traditionally known for teaching, nursing, social and pastoral ministries, societal needs in Africa are pushing sisters on the continent in a new direction to address food insecurity.
Three-day workshops were held in six countries (Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia) in early 2013 as part of the SLDI Alumni Association’s continued support to SLDI graduates.
Phase II of SLDI (2010-2012) served 250 women religious from 176 congregations in seven countries. Of the 250 women religious, 237 successfully completed the course and graduated in colorful, well-attended ceremonies held in each country.
Mr. Steven M. Hilton, President & CEO of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, led a delegation to Nairobi Kenya to visit with Catholic Sisters participants of the Sisters Leadership Development Initiative (SLDI) program.

By the end of the three-year program 267 Sisters from Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania, and Nigeria completed the program and received a certificate of completion at the graduation ceremonies.

To assist the sisters in becoming independent life-long learners and local leaders, an alumni association was formed with the participants from Phase I of the SLDI program
ASEC was initiated in 1998 and had now matured to the point where it was time to get computer labs and training centers opened, facilitating access to the Internet and distance education. This article reflects on our 2005 site visits to Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Ghana.
In September, 2004, sister-leaders from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda were invited to attend a conference at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia and Marywood University in Scranton, PA.
