African Sisters Benefit from Finance Workshops

During the SLDI Finance workshop session in Zambia sisters learned how to prepare a balance sheet.

Thu, Mar 22, 2018

Two sisters share how the SLDI finance workshops have helped them personally and their ministries.

Through the Sisters Leadership Development Initiative (SLDI), many sisters across Africa have gained a deeper understanding of finance. In this articlem Sr. Lizzy Mbobola and Sr. Asperanza Bahati Massawe, both of Zambia, share how SLDI’s financial workshops assisted not only themselves but their congregations as well.

Before she attended a workshop, Sr. Lizzy said that although she tried hard to learn about finances she just couldn’t understand its importance. Her lack of knowledge about finances led her to fear working with auditors.

“I used to look at auditors like they were just there to find faults and criticise whatever was done by an institution,” said Sr. Lizzy

Although, Sr. Lizzy was apprehensive on the first day of class she soon began to take an interest in the daily lessons. Eventually, she was able to follow the proceedings of each day and contribute positively  to the lessons.

Sr. Asperanza was excited to begin the course as soon as possible. She said that she believed the course would help her through her role as a hospital administrator. Sr. Asperanza explained a few topics that are taught at the finance workshops.

“I learned how to run an organization effectively and even about the good practices of keeping finances, project proposal, stewardship on account and financial management,” said Sr. Asperanza.

Both Sisters have greatly benefited by attending the SLDI Finance Workshop. The skills that Sr, Asperanza learned from the course assisted her in writing a proposal to finish renovations on a maternity annex. Sr. Lizzy gained a new understanding of how having financial knowledge could her help herself and her congregations. Through her experience she also changed her outlook on auditors.

“I have come to appreciate auditing as a tool that will help my congregation and I to know where we are and safeguard what we have. From this finance lesson I have made a resolution to not fear auditors,” said Sr. Lizzy.

Both Sisters are greatly appreciative for the opportunity they were given to complete the Finance training. They send their warmest regards to their instructors and to ASEC donors, sponsors and staff.
