As we celebrate 25 years of ASEC’s transformative work, we honor the women religious who have spearheaded a movement to enhance educational access for women in Africa. Since its official inauguration in 1999, ASEC has expanded to 10 countries and empowered women religious through programs like SLDI, HESA, the Scholarship Program, Service Learning, and the Research Initiative. These initiatives have equipped countless Sisters with leadership and professional skills to address challenges in their communities effectively.
As we celebrate 25 years of ASEC’s remarkable journey, we owe a deep debt of gratitude to the esteemed women religious in Africa and the United States who, in 1995, ignited our collective commitment to improving educational access for women. The Organization of ASEC was officially inaugurated in 1999 and has since expanded its reach to 10 countries in Africa, dedicated to providing essential educational opportunities for women religious. This mission has been powered by five core programs: the Sisters Leadership Development Initiative (SLDI), Higher Education for Sisters in Africa (HESA), the Scholarship Program, Service Learning, and the Research Initiative.
The impact of these programs on countless religious women, including myself, has been profound. In 2014 and 2015, I had the privilege of joining the ARU Secretariat in Uganda, where I participated in the SLDI program, specifically focusing on Administration.
This course equipped me with vital leadership skills and enhanced my understanding through practical mentoring exercises. This training enabled me to confidently address the challenges within my community, particularly when I was entrusted with the leadership of my fellow religious women during the trying times of the COVID-19 pandemic, starting in 2020.
I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank ASEC for offering us a variety of courses that have been instrumental in our success in fulfilling the responsibilities assigned by our Superiors. The administration course, in particular, has provided me with practical skills and the confidence necessary to embrace leadership roles in my community, fostering a spirit of unity and peace among us.
