ASEC: A Blessing to Women Religious in Africa

Sr. Sophia Asiimwe, MSMMC

Sat, Sep 28, 2024

Since its inception in 2006, ASEC has provided transformative education and training for Religious Sisters in Uganda and beyond. By fostering skills in administration, finance, and technology, ASEC has empowered Sisters to enhance their ministries and foster collaboration across congregations.

I had no idea how the initial conversations about ASEC at ARU Secretariat in 2006 would lead to such fruitful outcomes for Women Religious in Uganda and across Africa. From the beginning, it was apparent that members of ARU would be supported by four Congregations of Women Religious from the USA to raise funds and train fellow Sisters in Administration and Finance management skills. This news was met with joy and enthusiasm.

The excitement grew as Sisters from different Congregations came together to learn and acquire new skills. The camaraderie among them was heartwarming, often filled with laughter, particularly during computer classes, which were taught patiently by Sisters from the US over a month-long period. I often compare ASEC to manna in the desert; none of our congregations anticipated the level of education and training ASEC would provide.

Many Religious Sisters in Uganda have achieved higher educational qualifications, significantly improving the overall skill set within their congregations. The interactions fostered warm relationships among Sister’s congregations that previously had limited opportunities for collaboration. Recognizing that ASEC emerged from the collective commitment of four US Institutes is a powerful reminder of the impact of unity.

We are eternally grateful for their generous spiritual and material support. Since 2006, ASEC has been invaluable to me, enhancing my administration and technology skills, making my work more efficient and clearer. I sincerely appreciate all ASEC staff, past and present, for their tireless efforts to ensure the programs’ success.

Unite for the Future: Sponsor the Education of a Sister

Through ASEC, Religious Sisters in Africa gain critical skills that make their ministries more effective and their collaborations stronger. Programs like these have been described as “manna in the desert,” providing much-needed training in administration, finance, and technology. By sponsoring the education of a Sister, you can help foster this transformative change, ensuring that congregations and communities continue to thrive.
