8th Visiting Scholar Selected for CARA Research Fellowship

Sr. Victorine soon after landing in Washington, D.C., in January 2022.

Mon, Mar 7, 2022

Sr. Victorine Atsufui Afi Dorkenoo of the Sisters of Mary Mother of the Church (SMMC), from Ghana, has been selected as the 8th CARA-ASEC Visiting Scholar.

She will conduct research as a part of CARA, a non-profit Georgetown University affiliated research center that focuses on social scientific studies about the Catholic Church. CARA stands for the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate.

Sr. Victorine is currently the Deputy Director of Education and Municipal Welfare Officer in the Ho Municipal Education Directorate in Ghana. She holds both a Master of Philosophy and Master of Arts in Applied French Linguistics from the University of Cape Coast in Ghana. She has served as the head of her department and vice principal at two institutions and has over 25 years of experience teaching secondary and vocational education.

While others have described Sr. Victorine is hard working, highly competent and ready to learn new skills, she lists her hobbies as reading and listening to gospel music.

While serving as a Visiting Scholar fellow, she plans to conduct research on “The Impact of Social Media on the Indigenous Religious Institutes in Ghana.” She plans to study how religious institutes use social media to have a greater resonance in regard to their apostolates and the daily activities of their members. Her goals for the research include identifying the role of social media in the daily activities of the indigenous religious institutes, examining the extent to which social media keeps them abreast with the fast-growing media world and identifying the benefits of social media to indigenous religious institutes with reference to the apostolates of their members.

Sr. Victorine arrived in Washington, D.C. to begin her stay at CARA on January 6, 2022 and will conclude the fellowship and return to Ghana on June 1, 2022.

While virtually visiting the ASEC US office (March 21-25, 2022), Sr. Victorine will become more familiar with ASEC’s programs, increase her understanding of ASEC’s mission, and be assisted in carrying out her Visiting Scholar research as it pertains to ASEC.

About CARA

In 2015-2016, ASEC entered into an agreement with Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) at Georgetown University to bring African sisters to the U.S. for a Visiting Scholar Fellowship. CARA is a national, nonprofit research center that conducts social scientific studies about the Catholic Church. The chosen sister will work and study with CARA to advance their research skills.  ASEC is partnered with CARA to recruitment the sister scholars and engage them in research opportunities, including over one week at its Scranton, PA, office.
