Sr. Hellen Anthony Bandiho, STH, of Tanzania is the fourth Sister scholar accepted for a six month research fellowship to learn applied research skills in the apostolate at the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA), Georgetown University.

Sr. Hellen Anthony Bandiho, STH, Ph.D. of Tanzania is the fourth sister scholar accepted for a six month research fellowship to learn applied research skills in the apostolate at the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA), Georgetown University.

Through a grant awarded by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, CARA’s primary focus is to help African Sister Scholars acquire applied research skills in the apostolate over a six-month fellowship. The grant also supports the development and implementation of at least one research project in the home country each Sister Scholar.

Sr. Hellen is from Tanzania, East Africa and belongs to the international congregation of the Sisters of St. Therese of the Child Jesus (STH). She is a member of her congregation’s leadership team where she is responsible for fundraising and has an impressive record of service, sitting on many committees and boards.

Sr. Hellen received her BS in Business and her MBA from Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin. She earned her Doctorate of Education: Educational Leadership from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Sister Hellen has over 15 years experience leading and teaching in a higher education setting. She was the Director of St. Augustine University in Tanzania where she also taught management and leadership courses.  Sr. Hellen is the author of numerous publications relating to educational leadership.

On March 3, 2019, ASEC Headquarters held a breakfast for Visiting Scholar Sr. Hellen Anthony Bandiho, STH, Ph.D. of Tanzania and Fr. Tom Gaunt, SJ, Ph.D., Executive Director, Center for the Applied Research in the Apolostolate (CARA) at Georgetown University.

Sr. Hellen completed a comparative study examining the education levels of two congregations in Tanzania and this study was published in ASEC’s 2019 book, Transformative Partnerships.

While at CARA, Sr. Hellen will pursue research titled, Women Religious in Tanzania: Effective Evangelization in Modern Society. The main question she seeks to answer with her research is

“How can the sisters be prepared, beyond formal education, to address spiritual and social needs of the youth today?”

Sr. Hellen visited ASEC headquarters in Scranton, PA, from March 3-8, 2019 to learn about ASEC, provide the staff with valuable insights and to share her research interests. Sr. Hellen is the fourth research fellowship recipient, preceded by African Sister Scholars Sr. Bibiana M. Ngundo, LSOSF, Kenya, Sr. Florence Emurayeveya, EHJ, Nigeria and Sr. Joan Chisala, CJSB, Zambia.

Later in March, ASEC staff held a collaborative video conferencing session with Sr. Hellen and some of the former Visiting Scholars. The session allowed the scholars and ASEC staff to share ideas, challenges and future research questions.
