ASEC my Enabler: From learner to leader

Sister Margaret Wanda in her role as a superior graciously receives the vows of a junior sister

Sat, Dec 14, 2024

With the support of ASEC, HESA alumna Sr. Margaret Wanda, DOJGS, became a trained nurse and leader, serving as Superior General of her congregation and a board member of CASA-K, where she integrates healthcare and compassionate leadership to uplift both her congregation and the elderly Sisters in her care.

I am a religious sister from the religious congregation of Daughters of Jesus the Good shepherd. The African Sisters Education Collaborative (ASEC) has had a transformative experience in my life. As one of the pioneer members in the Nursing studies, I am proud nurse as we celebrate the Silver Jubilee. During my studies, ASEC provided invaluable support, ensuring I excelled academically and developed essential leadership skills through a holistic approach.

After my nursing education, I was humbly chosen as the Superior General of my congregation. This role brought immense responsibility and an opportunity to lead with empathy and vision. My pivotal role in guiding the Congregation’s mission to make the presence of Jesus actual and effective in the families is ignited by the skills acquired. My understanding of human behaviour and empathetic approach to leadership have empowered me to address the emotional and psychological need of the members of our congregation. This has fostered nurturing environment within the congregation, ensuring that all members feel supported and understood. This has strengthened the unity and resilience for the collective mission of the congregation.

Additionally, I was appointed as a board member of CASA-K, dedicated to caring for aged and sickly sisters in Kenya. My nursing background and leadership training from ASEC allowed me to contribute effectively, blending my passion for nursing with a commitment to leadership.

I attribute my leadership skills in both responsibilities to ASEC empowerment. The counseling psychology skills acquired during my Nursing studies have helped me as a leader to learn to listen to myself and to others ASEC, your dedication to empowering women religious has shaped my journey and inspired me to lead with empathy and purpose.
